Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has soared to the summit of the Steam charts, setting a new all-time series record for concurrent players just days after its official launch. The game arrived on October 2 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, following a three-day early access period reserved for Deluxe Edition owners.
A Record-Breaking Launch on Steam
Data from SteamDB shows that Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve reached a peak of 37,214 concurrent players on Steam. To put that into perspective, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown — the previous high-water mark for the franchise — maxed out at 13,758 players. The new installment has therefore surpassed its predecessor by roughly 2.7 times.
By Friday morning, the game had also claimed the number one spot on Steam's global sales chart by revenue, edging out AION 2 and Gears of War: E-Day.
Positive Reception Marred by Technical Complaints
Player reviews have been mostly encouraging. Among the more than 5,000 reviews posted so far, about 76% are positive. Gamers have singled out the aerial combat, the campaign, and the music for praise, while performance and technical problems have drawn criticism.
Easy Anti-Cheat has become a particular flashpoint: Linux and SteamOS users report being able to enter the online lobby but hitting an error whenever they try to start a mission.
The Record Could Still Climb
The peak player count may not be final. With the full release only just beginning, Friday evening and the first weekend after launch are still to come — meaning the numbers could rise even further.
